Long, long ago, there was a very wise sage called Kalava Maharishi. He had 360 beautiful daughters! Can you ever imagine having so many sisters? Sage Kalava was concerned with marrying all his daughters off. So, he prayed very, very hard to Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu, also called Perumal, is one of the most significant gods in Hinduism.

Guess what did happen? Lord Vishnu responded to Sage Kalava’s prayers! He chose to descend to Earth in the form of a dashing young bachelor. And here is the wonderful thing: He wedded one daughter each and every day for a whole year! That is how he wedded all 360 of them! Since he wedded someone “daily” or “eternally,” he earned the unique name Nitya Kalyana Perumal, which means “the Lord who weds every day” or “the Lord of eternal wedding.”

On the last day itself, Lord Vishnu, in all his omnipotence, combined all 360 daughters into one lovely goddess. He placed her on his left side. This lovely goddess is today referred to as Akhilavalli Thayar or Komalavalli Thayar. That’s why the place is named Thiruvidanthai – because “Idanthai” in Tamil means “left side,” implying the Goddess on the Lord’s left! Isn’t that a great tale of divine love and benevolence?

And there’s another fascinating legend as well! Nitya Kalyana Perumal Temple is also associated with Lord Varaha, who is Lord Vishnu’s avatar (or incarnation) as a boar.
