Imagine long ago, long, long ago, there were two young ones called Kedar and Gauri. They loved one another very, very much, more than anything at all in the world! But, oh dear, their families and the villagers did not want them to be together. It was a pitiful thing. So, what did they do? They thought to themselves, “Let us run away from our village to be with one another.”.

They kept walking and walking, and Gauri became extremely, extremely hungry. Kedar, being the kind soul that he was, set off to get her some food. But unfortunately, on his way to get food, a wild tiger pounced on him, and he was killed. Oh no! When Gauri was told this awful news, she was so, so grief-stricken that she jumped into a pond that was nearby and, well, she died too. It’s a very sad moment in the story.

When the king of the kingdom, King Lalatendu Keshari, learned of this heart-wrenching love tale, he was so touched by their chaste love. He chose to construct this lovely Kedaragouri Temple on the very location where Gauri died, in a unique remembrance of Kedar and Gauri and their ever-lasting love. That’s why, even nowadays, lots of couples visit this temple to pray for a long and happy married life, as Kedar and Gauri wished for.

There’s another tale as well, where it is said that Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati themselves selected this serene location to meditate after returning from Varanasi. They were fond of the tranquility and serenity of the location, and hence, the temple was constructed in their memory. Whichever tale you hear, it’s evident this Kedaragouri Temple is a location filled with utmost love and devotion.
