But something horrid emerged first – a dreadful poison.
In order to save the world, Lord Shiva consumed all of that poison! Gosh, what a courageous thing to do! And it’s said that this wonderful incident, or at least a portion of it, occurred close to a Shiv Shakti temple in this area. This makes Shiv Shakti Temple Bhagalpur and other Shiva temples here special since they are linked to such a large, significant event within our Hindu mythology.
There is another pretty legend that informs us a temple in this area is where Goddess Sati’s heart and navel fell. Goddess Sati is one incarnation of Goddess Shakti and Lord Shiva’s first wife. When Goddess Sati died by leaving her body, Lord Shiva was so sad and carried around her body. Her limbs dropped at various locations, and all such locations became stalwart Shakti Peeth, a sacred place to worship the Goddess.
