It’s located amidst lovely green hills close to a village named Kolvan, not far from Pune city in the state of Maharashtra, India. History of Hadshi Temple: A Story of Love and Peace

You know, every special destination has a story, and the Hadshi Temple has a stunning one! It’s not an extremely, extremely old temple like some others you may have heard of. This beautiful temple was constructed in the year 2009 by a very generous and loving individual, Mr. Jadhav, with Shri Satya Sai Baba’s blessings. Can you believe constructing such an enormous and lovely temple? It covers a large piece of ground, nearly like 300 acres, with expansive, green lawns that are ideal for playing around or just lying around.

The concept of constructing the Hadshi Temple was to have an area where people could all feel love, peace, and harmony. It’s a temple where various deities are worshipped, so therefore it is home to many different gods and goddesses. This is a unique place where people of all classes and backgrounds can come and feel part of something greater than themselves.

Legend of Hadshi Temple: Divine Blessings and a Vision

Though the Hadshi Temple is young, its roots lie in abiding faith and a unique vision. The mythology here has nothing to do with old kings and wars, but with the heavenly vision that created it. It is said that Shri Satya Sai Baba himself had a vision for this tranquil place. He wished there to be a haven where devotion could grow amidst the splendor of nature, a sacred place of peace and spirituality.

You will not find direct quotes regarding the Hadshi Temple in very ancient Hindu scriptures or Puranas since it’s a new temple. Yet, the gods worshipped here, such as Lord Vitthal and Rukmini, and Lord Ganesha, are ancient and are found mentioned throughout various Hindu scriptures. For instance, Lord Vitthal is an incarnation of Lord Krishna, and stories of Lord Krishna are wonderfully narrated in the Bhagavata Purana and the Mahabharata.

One of the most popular verses on Lord Vitthal, one of the major deities at Hadshi Temple, is by great Marathi saints Sant Tukaram and Sant Dnyaneshwar in their Abhangs (devotional poetry). For example, Sant Tukaram would frequently compose about Vitthal in great devotion. One such simple thought from his Abhangs would be:

“Majhe Maaher Pandhari, Aahe Bheema tiri.
Pundalik Devha, Vitthal Rakhumai.”

Which translates to:
“My birthplace is Pandhari (Pandharpur), on the banks of river Bheema.
Pundalik is the devotee, Vitthal and Rakhumai are the gods.”

This illustrates how highly Lord Vitthal is revered in Maharashtra, and the Hadshi Temple admirably continues this tradition.

Architecture: A Beautifully Designed Haven

Let’s discuss the way the Hadshi Temple appears! It’s a very grand, gorgeous edifice. The temple is situated on a “table land,” which resembles a flat piece of land atop a hill, surrounded by scenic mountains. Picture a huge, well-maintained garden, extending over acres, with beautiful landscaping. That’s what you’ll experience here!

The central temple building consists of two stories. There are shrines to Shirdi Sai Baba and Satya Sai Baba on the ground floor. Isn’t it great to see both types of Sai Baba under one roof? As you climb the stairs, or take a special elevator if you can’t (they’ve got provisions for all, grandmas and grandpas included!), you’ll find yourself on the first floor. There you can see the principal shrine of Lord Pandurang, which is another name for Lord Krishna, and his wife Rukmini, along with Shri Ganesh.

The architecture is kept simple but beautiful, making it easy to have a peaceful environment. Look at how spotless and clean everything is, right from the walkways to the prayer rooms. The entire layout of the Hadshi Temple complex is extremely thoughtful, making it very easy and pleasant for people of all ages to navigate.

Thursdays and Sundays: Both the days tend to be slightly more populated than weekdays, particularly Sundays, since most families from Pune and Mumbai visit for a day excursion to the Hadshi Temple. Weekends are when the canteen of the temple may even offer hot pakodas, so if you are a snack-lover, do remember that!

Monsoon Season: The monsoon season (June to September) is particularly well-suited to visit Hadshi Temple. The mountains surrounding this temple turn a beautiful shade of green, and the fresh, cool air makes the experience even more enchanting. Although it may be slightly crowded, the natural beauty at this time is simply stunning.

The unique poojas conducted here typically consist of presenting flowers, fruits, and sweets before the gods, reciting mantras, and conducting aartis. All these rituals are simply about expressing our love and respect towards God and seeking His blessings.

It feels as though you’re walking through a book of Indian spiritual heroes! You get to see statues of Sai Baba, Shiv Parvati, Krishna, Sant Tukaram, and so many others. It’s an excellent place to learn about the teachings of these saints.

Hadshi Lake: A mere distance away from the Hadshi Temple is the peaceful Hadshi Lake. It’s an ideal place for a moment of peace, a picnic with family, or simply basking in the beauty of the reflected green hills in the lake. You might even glimpse the historical Tikona Fort in the distance from here!

Tikona Fort: Alternatively, for a little adventure, there is the historic hill fort of Tikona not very far off. It is an enjoyable trek and has spectacular views from the top.

Mulshi Dam: Also near by is this lovely dam, which is frequented by people who bring picnics and go to enjoy the scenic loveliness, especially during monsoon.

Pawna Lake: A little distant, but well worth the visit, is Pawna Lake. It’s a very happening place for camping and boating, nestled between beautiful hills.

How to Reach Hadshi Temple: Your Journey to Peace

Reaching Hadshi Temple is half the fun! It is situated around 40-50 kilometers from Pune, in the Mulshi area.

By Car: This is usually the most convenient option to travel to Hadshi Temple. The roads are fairly good, and the drive is extremely scenic, particularly during monsoon when all is fresh and green.

From Pune: You can go through Chandni Chowk, then Pirangut, and then Paud. From Paud, turn to the right immediately after the bus station and continue straight towards Kolvan. You will have signboards for Hadshi Temple on the way. The last couple of kilometers could be a little narrow, but it is completely motorable. There is a large parking space at the temple, and it’s most often free!

From Mumbai: It is a bit longer drive of about 120-130 kilometers but still quite possible for a day outing or a weekend trip.

Public Transport: Although direct public transport may be less regular, you can travel from Pune to Paud by bus and then take a local taxi or auto-rickshaw to reach the Hadshi Temple.

Regardless of how you get there, the ride to Hadshi Temple is full of lovely scenery, and the thrill of finally getting there to experience the serenity of the place is even greater.
